Although nearly six years passed between Beck’s “Modern Guilt” and “Morning Phase,” the singer believes he may well have another album out by the end of 2014.
“I’ve been working on and off on a different set of songs – they’re more boisterous (than “Morning Phase”),” he said April 16 during a mid-concert interview in Santa Monica for KCRW. ” “You’re screwed with any kind of adjective,” he cautioned, “but hopefully we’ll get it out this year.”

Beck performed six songs from “Morning Phase,” some of which he had only played live once or twice, in a 16-song set at Apogee Studios, adding Donna Summer’s “I Feel Love” to his own 2006 composition “Think I’m in Love” and offering a drawn-out reading of Michael Jackson’s “Billie Jean” that fed into imitations of the late qawwali singer Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan. The concert will be broadcast April 23 on KCRW’s “Morning Becomes Eclectic” show and at KCRW.com; “MBE” host Jason Bentley conducted the interview.
Beck’s first set wholly captured the moody dreamscape milieu of “Morning Phase,” sliding gently from new songs into “Lost Cause” from the album’s sonic predecessor “Sea Change.” His five-piece band did a dramatic personality change for the final eight songs, instantly emphasizing spiky guitars and percussive elements while Beck sprang into his more animated self best typified by “Devils Haircut.”

As Bentley pointed out in his interview, Beck’s 50-minute sets at Coachella offer dips into more genres than any other performer on the bill. “It’s not our show,” Beck said, “so we try to come up with something that makes sense.”
