Before trap was “trap,” the boys of Flosstradamus released their remix of Major Lazer’s “Original Don.” The January 2012 banger turned the duo into the de facto faces of a burgeoning movement, and in the time since, Floss has been happy to embrace its trap ambassador status. Now, Josh Young and Curt Cameruci (better known as J2K and Autobot), have a fan army of self-dubbed #HOODIEBOYZ (just check out the adoration in their Twitter feed) and a packed calendar of high-profile gigs across the country.
For a sense of the fervor that follows them, look no further than the video for their DJ Sliink collab “CROWD CTRL” (from their “Nomad” EP released on A-Traks Fool’s Gold back in April). The clip, premiering exclusively on CODE, shows the duo spinning its dub-meets-hip-hop sound to rapt crowds from Manhattan to Miami. The track itself is an ideal example of the sound that has taken trap to the main stage—from the laser-sharp synth topline to its huge build-up and head-banging drop.
Floss’ high-intensity ethos extends to the visuals as well, as the video opens with a caution-cum-challenge for viewers. “Warning,” it reads. “This film contains flashing lights which may not be suitable for those not ready to turn up.”
